Beyond Architecture: Discovering Portugal Through Wine & Design - 2 days

The challenge

How do you bring a team of architecture professionals closer to the identity of a destination?

A Swiss architectural company approached VINITUR to organise a team experience in Porto, looking for more than a conventional city break. The goal was to combine architecture, culture, gastronomy and moments of shared discovery, offering employees a fresh perspective on Portuguese creativity and heritage. The programme needed to balance professional curiosity with authentic local encounters, memorable dining experiences and time spent together, while showcasing the distinctive character of Porto and the Douro Valley.

The proposal

Vinitur designed a two-day journey exploring Portugal through the eyes of its architects, winemakers and local communities.

The programme combined a private architectural walking tour led by a local architect, curated food tastings, a scenic train journey through the Douro Valley, exclusive wine experiences and a private river cruise.

Every detail was selected to reveal the relationship between architecture, landscape, tradition and contemporary creativity. From historic urban landmarks to innovative winery design, the experience offered a deeper understanding of the places and people shaping northern Portugal.

The Execution
Day 1
Discovering Porto Through Architecture

The experience began with a panoramic introduction to Porto, followed by a welcome breakfast overlooking the Douro River, where the group met their local architect and discovered the city's architectural evolution.

The guided tour explored Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, revealing the work of influential architects and the stories behind the city's distinctive urban landscape. Highlights included the iconic Luís I Bridge, historic railway architecture, contemporary public spaces and significant works of Portuguese modernism. Along the way, the group enjoyed traditional Portuguese flavours through carefully selected tastings, including local pastries, coffee, regional cheeses, cured meats and wine. A visit to a social housing project designed by a renowned Portuguese architect offered another perspective on the relationship between architecture, communities and everyday life. The day concluded with a welcome dinner at a contemporary Portuguese restaurant, where traditional flavours met a modern culinary approach.

Day 1
Day 2
A Journey Through the Douro Valley

The second day began with a scenic train journey along the Douro railway line, following the river through terraced vineyards and the dramatic landscapes of one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions. Upon arrival, the group visited a renowned wine estate, where a guided tour explored the winemaking process and the relationship between contemporary architecture and the surrounding landscape. A wine tasting and a leisurely lunch paired regional wines with local cuisine. The journey continued aboard a traditional private riverboat, offering a different perspective on the valley's vineyards, historic estates and riverside villages. In the afternoon, the group explored a contemporary winery designed by a celebrated Portuguese architect, discovering its innovative architecture and tasting a selection of regional wines.

The experience culminated in a memorable dinner inside a historic wine cellar, surrounded by ageing barrels and overlooking Porto and the Douro River. A carefully paired menu celebrated the connection between Portuguese gastronomy and its internationally recognised wines.

Throughout the programme, a dedicated Vinitur guide provided assistance, coordination and personal support, ensuring a seamless experience from beginning to end.
